Professor Rodrigo Nunes da Fonseca Recognized as an “Established Researcher” in the Journal of Experimental Zoology Part B
Professor Rodrigo Nunes-da-Fonseca, from the Institute of Biodiversity and Sustainability at UFRJ (NUPEM/UFRJ), in Macaé (RJ), has been recognized as one of the leading figures in evolutionary developmental biology (Evo-Devo) by the international scientific journal Journal of Experimental Zoology Part B: Molecular and Developmental Evolution. The Brazilian researcher was featured in the journal’s prestigious “In the Spotlight” section, which honors accomplished scientists with a significant impact on the field.
The publication highlights the pioneering and original nature of Professor Nunes-da-Fonseca’s career, noting that he was the first scientist in Evo-Devo to apply this approach to the study of neglected arthropods—such as mosquitoes that transmit tropical diseases and black flies—linking developmental biology to urgent public health and biodiversity challenges. His career trajectory, from a public school student in Rio de Janeiro to an internationally recognized researcher with experience at the University of Cologne, Germany, and collaborations with renowned figures in evolutionary genetics, serves as an inspiration. His work is characterized by a visionary approach to science that integrates academic excellence, the training of new scientists, and a commitment to open and collaborative research.
Beyond his contributions to Evo-Devo, Professor Nunes-da-Fonseca was also one of the first researchers in Brazil to establish a COVID-19 testing laboratory. He led molecular diagnostic and genomic surveillance efforts in Macaé (RJ) during the most critical moments of the pandemic. This initiative played a vital role in the regional response to the health crisis and solidified his reputation as a scientist dedicated to serving society. “Scientific excellence can emerge anywhere—what matters is curiosity, creativity, and a collaborative spirit,” he told the journal in an interview.
This international recognition underscores the value of high-quality science conducted in institutions outside major urban centers and highlights the strategic importance of NUPEM/UFRJ as a hub for research, scientific training, and regional development.
With this distinction, Rodrigo Nunes-da-Fonseca cements his status as one of the most influential figures in global Evo-Devo, inspiring others through the strength of his science and his unwavering commitment to collaboration and social impact.
